Why You Should Fertigate by Jeff Smith, Fertigation and Injection Specialist
In today’s golf market, increased rounds and a lack of staffing creates many challenges for
superintendents. These challenges can include increased stress on the turf from traffic or the
inability to mow as frequently. Fertigation can help solve many common challenges. By
injecting nutrients and soil amendments through the irrigation system, the labor costs of
applying granular products can be reduced. This also allows the superintendent to spoon-feed
the turf, therefore eliminating the surges of growth normally associated with granular fertilizer
applications. Fertigation is also equally efficient for commercial ornamental production.
Helena now offers a line of Inject-O-Meter™ pumping systems to help you deliver effective solutions
through your irrigation system. We can offer systems that supply as low as 0.5 gallons per hour or up to 30 gallons per hour. There is also an option for a duplex system that allows you to inject two different products at the same time.
Helena has an established portfolio of products that can be combined to inject when necessary. We
have the ability to create custom blends of nutritionals, organic acids, and wetting agents, which gives
us the opportunity to assist the customer in creating overall consistency in their turf, mitigating
traditional hot spots and wet areas. We can also use our products to create water conditioning blends to help alleviate poor irrigation water quality. When addressing poor water quality issues, we can help
correct the build-up of sodium and bicarbonates in the soil, creating a healthier growing medium for
plants or turf.
